Material focus: Mohair wool
Everyone knows mohair, but did you know that it is one of the most expensive materials in the world? Or that it is the oldest natural animal fibre used by man? At Illustre Paris, we are crazy about it and you will understand why.
What is mohair wool?
Mohair wool is a natural fibre of excellence, derived from the long, light and shiny fleece of the Angora goat. It is highly valued throughout the world for its quality, softness and durability.
It is made up of keratin, which gives it a reflective appearance and a magnificent, unusual shine.
How is mohair wool produced?
To begin with, it should be noted that its production represents only 1% of the total production of natural fibres in the world. This is why it is considered a true luxury product.
The price is therefore higher than that of conventional wool, due to the slower production process. The angora goat produces less wool than the sheep. To recover the mohair fibre, the animals are shorn twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn. The production process then consists of sorting and cleaning the wool, the producer then organises different batches according to the fineness of each fibre. The mohair is then washed, dried and combed, before being woven, spun and dyed.
Finally, the production of real quality mohair must comply with strict specifications that commit to respecting the well-being of the animal and the environment.

What are the advantages of mohair wool?
First of all, this natural fibre has a particular affinity with dyeing, which allows for all shades and good colour retention over time.
Another advantage is that mohair wool is breathable. It is also thermoregulating and has a strong insulating power, which makes it particularly pleasant to wear in winter to protect oneself from the cold, but also in summer, since it lets the skin breathe while keeping it cool.
Its softness is one of its other assets and it is also known to be wrinkle-free.
Finally, as explained above, mohair, when it respects its production specifications, is ecological since it is an animal material from a natural and renewable resource.
